Spring weather this weekend was perfect for bikes, chalk drawings and experimenting with mixing live video and stop motion. There are a few things I would change (wind moving my tripod!), but doing this project with my kids isn't one of them.

Some BTS of my running fox leaf project. I had no idea if I could make this concept work, but it was so fun brainstorming how to pull everything together. So when my vision came to life, it was all icing on the cake.

We're transitioning to a digital-only magazine at my full-time job. Our team collaborated to create a flat lay for the cover image for the final print issue, and when a colleague suggested animating it for the online version, she didn't have to ask me twice.

It's bittersweet to quit printing a 100-year-old publication, but I'm excited about the opportunity to tell our members' stories in ways print didn't allow.

I've been in a creative rut, so I gave myself a challenge to recreate and animate an AI-generated image. Creativity was my theme for this first attempt. I always leave @cm_columbiamo feeling so inspired, and @shellylafata 's talk on Spicy was no exception. Her story of starting and growing @pastalafata is such a lovely story of family and community and love and friendship and passion for what you do, and she tells it so well. I guess New Year's Day is also National Bloody Mary Day, aka an excuse to eat pickles and olives for breakfast.
Since learning how to mix live video with stop motion I've want to try a video that includes pouring a cocktail while garnishes appear by magic. I loved brainstorming how to get that salt rim to grow onto the glass as the drink finished pouring, and I'm so pleased with the results!

It took about three hours to lay out this scene, and another two to slowly move the flowers to animate it. All for about 8 seconds of video. Worth it.

New animation! Joan from @cultivatecomo is doing some really amazing work incorporating Missouri natives into her cut flower farm. Not only is she growing more of them on her farm, but she's also working on a project that will help other Missouri flower farmers learn how to use native plants in their work. So, what better way to highlight Missouri natives than to use them to build the state of Missouri?

1. I shot this animation in reverse, creating the state of Missouri first and then started shooting as I removed the flowers. It took me about three hours to arrange the flowers. (This includes the breaks I took when my kids came downstairs to ask for snacks.) I used some removable clear adhesive dots to help some of the flowers stay where I needed them and with their bloom facing the camera.
2. I used an overlay in Dragonframe to create the shape. In this video, you can also see how I raised up the "hero" flower on a small wooden block. I ended up having to replace this bloom a couple times, because by the time I was ready to have it slide off the screen, the bloom was a little wilted.
3. The hardest part of this project for me was creating this beautiful scene - and then having to destroy it to create the animation. (Well, that and making sure my phone had enough battery to actually record the entire timelapse of this part of the animation.)

I've been working on some videos for Kernel Season's to promote their upcoming trip to AwesomeCon, which has led to some playful animations.

Some particularly fun things about this project:
1. Since I wanted the beams to have kind of a sporadic, jerky motion, this is probably the least precise stop motion I will ever shoot. I just secured the shakers, then needed to make sure different wires moved each frame, but I purposefully made those movements pretty haphazard.
2. Tiny popcorn bucket!
3. Tiny proton packs!

I started setting up with solid pink and didn't love it. So on came stripes, coasters and napkins. Simple additions that made a huge impact, and the bright colors all around really make the white paddle stand out.
